Vaav | Print Design project

Brief
To make a Print collection for Home Decor and Furnishing for A/W 21/22 which is inspired from step wells of Gujarat. The collection celebrates the architectural grandeur of the step wells and creates a calming experience with a feeling of awe.
Inspiration Board
The reason for choosing Stepwells as an inspiration raised from the want to relive the experience of descending a stepwell. To express the amazement from these wells which served a purpose and were not just beautiful structures. The idea was also to show human interaction with these stepwells. The three main stepwells chosen for research were the 'Adalaj ni Vaav', the 'Rani ni vaav' and the 'Dada Harir Vaav'.

Hand drawn Motifs and elements to be used to build the main surface
Since many elements for my print had strong vertical lines, I decided to set the unit in a brick repeat manner to balance out the vertical-ness. The area for the single repeat unit was 24" x 10" to be used for a 48" x 20" screen. My approach was to compose digitally to get a pilot understanding of how the elements reacted and which scale for each of them would be suitable.
Treatments and Experimentation

Refined Main surface with more added textures. Reduced to 5 colours. Half step repeat.
